My Memoir of Adventures in Africa
-After 42 years in the making, Becoming Fearless: Finding Courage in the African Wilderness is making its debut in August 2023. What an extraordinary journey I experienced in 1981 when my daredevil boss, Richard Bangs, recently named by Explorersweb as one of the top 100 adventurers of the last century, decided I should accompany him and an elite group of the most experienced and fearless river guides in the world on an expedition to Africa.
In this memoir you’ll travel with me as I embarked on a twelve-day journey by raft through Africa’s largest uninhabited, pristine wilderness–The Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania. As if surviving a journey of 170 miles in an inflatable raft on rivers teeming with hippos and crocodiles wasn't a daunting enough challenge, I then trekked along a rarely used trail (at that time) on Africa's highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, over three miles high above sea level.
